
Not all readers of African American urban fiction know this, but the genre has a godmother. Vickie Stringer has been called The Queen of Urban Novels and can be considered The Godmother of Hip Hop Literature. Stringer started out by self-publishing her book Let That Be The Reason, which was an Essence best selling book, and went on to launch Triple Crown Publications, which has been a leader in urban fiction and gangster literature for ten years.
Triple Crown Publications continues to publish black urban novels by Vickie Stringer, but it also has a long list of other authors that it publishes as well. A sampling of Triple Crown authors includes Darrell Debrew, Buffie Carruth, Tu-Shonda L. Whitaker, Jason Poole, Tanika Lynch and Leo Sullivan.
